  8.      The  benefits  of  using  TextCon  may  not  be  immediately
  9.      apparent from  reading the  documentation.    You  can  give
  10.      yourself a  quick demonstration of its capabilities by using
  11.      TEXTCON.DOC as a sample ASCII file.

  13.      Start by  loading the  unmodified TEXTCON.DOC into your word
  14.      processor using  the word  processor's ASCII import command.
  15.      Browse through  the document  and you'll  notice that it may
  16.      appear to  be formatted  correctly, but  the "formatting" is
  17.      all created  by use  of hard  returns and  hard spaces.  Try
  18.      editing parts  of it  and you'll  quickly see  the  problems
  19.      caused by  unwanted hard  returns, extra  blank  spaces  and
  20.      blank lines,  and even headers and footers interspersed with
  21.      the text.

  23.      Then use  TextCon to  clean up  TEXTCON.DOC.  Since the file
  24.      has headers  in it,  you should  use the  /H  option.    For
  25.      Microsoft Word,  Word  Perfect,  Displaywrite,  XyWrite  and
  26.      others, the complete command would be:

  28.      TEXTCON /H TEXTCON.DOC TEXTCON.TXT
  29.      
  30.      For word  processors such as MultiMate, Volkswriter, and PC-
  31.      Write, which  cannot accept  each paragraph as one long line
  32.      with no imbedded returns, use the command:

  34.      TEXTCON /H /KR TEXTCON.DOC TEXTCON.TXT
  35.      
  36.      And for WordStar, use:
  37.      
  38.      TEXTCON /H /R TEXTCON.DOC TEXTCON.TXT
  39.      
  40.      Then import  TEXTCON.TXT to your word processor, again using
  41.      its standard  ASCII import command, and examine the results.
  42.      Notice how  much cleaner  the text is and how much less work
  43.      you have  to do  to reformat  it or  edit it.   Much  of the
  44.      formatting will  be gone,  but you'll  see  that  it's  much
  45.      easier to  add your desired formatting to the converted file
  46.      than it is to work with the unconverted one.
